Description & Requirements
At Bloomberg Beta, we believe the future of business will be driven by extraordinary founders and revolutionary technologies. We're a $375M early-stage venture firm, backed by Bloomberg L.P., investing in startups that make business work better — with a particular focus on artificial intelligence. We're known for our radical transparency, our commitment to founders, and our approach that anyone on our team can say "yes" to an investment. Take a look at our public operating manual to see how we think!
Who are we?
We’re an early-stage venture firm with $375M total under management, and we invest in early-stage startups that make business work better, with a focus in AI.
We aspire to be the most transparent venture firm. We’re data driven, we’re intense, and we treat customer service as a religion — just like the rest of Bloomberg. We’re a small, feisty team that relishes stretching our resources a long way. You’ll get to spend time with some of the most promising startups in the technology industry, and with a venture firm that approaches its work in a one-of-a-kind way — for example, in our firm, anyone on the team can say yes to investing in a startup (yes, that would include you).
You will succeed in this role if you’re curious about the founders and startups we back — in areas like artificial intelligence, productivity tools, media, robotics, data, sales, and operations — and want to serve founders. We want low-ego, high-agency people who are a pleasure to be around.
In this role, we will trust you to:
● Manage and prioritize a variety of tasks supporting one of our SF-based partners, from company research, founder follow-ups, relationship building, and other tasks
● Serve as an additional pair of eyes and hands to provide portfolio company support
● Help be Bloomberg Beta’s presence at key events and build a network of startup founders (and future founders), operators, and domain experts
● Support our Operating Partner on fund and firm processes — our approach depends on many important, detailed operational processes around how we handle communication, research, and more; every member of our team spends significant effort on these priorities
● Support writing our monthly investment memos and portfolio updates
● Assist with deal sourcing, screening, analysis and making investments
● Create and develop programs to amplify Bloomberg Beta’s value to the startup and technology community
● Collaborate with internal partners and senior leaders across Bloomberg LP —particularly our CTO, engineering, and data teams — to advance Bloomberg’s broader efforts within new technologies and startups
You have (in order of priority):
● Effective interpersonal skills in building internal and external relationships
● Strong time management and prioritization skills — The role is unstructured and you’ll need to hone your judgment in deciding whether something is urgent and unimportant versus urgent and important, and you’ll need to be fast in your responses and in your ability to get things done
● Intellectual curiosity — You like to learn and seek out the new. You’ll relish being asked to try a new product and offer feedback
● Technical expertise — Experience using, creating, or evaluating code, especially AI
● Genuine curiosity about startups — Maybe you have a blog digging into new technologies or are always learning about new companies
● Humility and hustle to take on unfamiliar tasks and execute them with poise
● Empathy, honesty, and integrity, particularly under pressure and ambiguity
● Attention to detail and ability to do “finished work” — When a document is important, you make it letter perfect
● Deep familiarity as a software user — You know how to be a pro at finding the right settings, picking the right software for the task, and making software do more than what others can make it do
● Strong analytical skills and quantitative know-how to organize large amounts of information into context
Candidates can apply for this role without venture capital experience or a degree. Previous startup and software development experience is welcome.
