Description & Requirements
Bloomberg News is one of the biggest financial and business news organizations in the world. We lead the way in breaking news and providing analysis on financial markets, from daily coverage through to in-depth features. We are known for our quality, accuracy and ability to deliver news investors can use. It’s what keeps us inventing and re-inventing, all the time.
Bloomberg News is seeking an editor to join the Data Visualisation team in London to cover weekend shifts. You’ll collaborate with editors and reporters across the newsroom to pursue smart visualisation opportunities related to planned and unplanned news over weekends, and you’ll create clear and informative charts, maps and other creative graphics that help readers draw insights from data.
Working Friday through Tuesday, you’ll report and produce your own data-driven graphics on breaking news and coverage that develops over weekends, as well as compelling visual narratives on other deadlines. You'll work alongside and have support from other data visualisation reporters and editors during weekday shifts, and you’ll leverage your own news judgment as you collaborate with news editors on the weekend. On weekend shifts, you’ll attend news meetings and coordinate across the global newsroom to help guide timely coverage supported by data and graphics. And you’ll work at least four days per week in-person in Bloomberg’s London office.
Candidates eager to transition to a leadership role who can show an extensive background creating data visualisations and who work well independently are encouraged to apply.
We’ll trust you to:
- Rely on your exceptional curiosity, technical prowess and design sensibilities to create informative maps, charts and other graphics in response to news
- Work efficiently under tight deadlines
- Collaborate with weekend newsroom leadership to understand coverage priorities and guide reporting teams toward data reporting and visualisations
- Coordinate with Data Visualisation team leadership to spot opportunities that help us prepare for planned news
You’ll need to have:
- Exceptional news judgment with a passion for breaking news
- Strong sense of visual design, layout, typography and user experience and familiarity with design software such as Adobe Illustrator and Figma
- Experience with data reporting, e.g. the ability to collect, manage, munge, explore and analyse data from various sources and formats using R, Python or other programmatic methods
- Experience with front-end web development using modern HTML, CSS and JavaScript and rendering graphics in the browser
We'd like to see:
- Curiosity about topics core to Bloomberg News coverage — including finance, markets, economics and government policy, among others — and an eagerness to develop subject-matter expertise in these areas
