Description & Requirements

Bloomberg News is one of the biggest financial and business news organizations in the world. We lead the way in breaking news and providing analysis on financial markets, from intraday coverage through in-depth features. We are known for our quality, accuracy and ability to deliver news investors can use. It's what keeps us inventing and re-inventing, all the time. Bloomberg LP has built a significant media business spanning television, digital, magazine, radio and live event platforms across the globe. In the midst of a historic time in the media industry, Bloomberg Media is growing its global footprint and reach through new innovations from Bloomberg Originals to New Economy Forum.

Bloomberg Digital is looking for an EMEA-based editor to commission and edit news explainers. You will focus on content related to Europe, the Middle East and Africa, but as part of a small, global team, your work will touch other regions as well.

The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist with a passion for explaining the context behind news stories. In this role you should be curious about a wide range of topics including business, finance, markets, economics and technology — as well as the environment, health, politics, government and culture. Comfort with a highly collaborative and innovative setting is a must.

We'll trust you to:
  • Have excellent news judgment, a sense of urgency on breaking news, and a strong understanding of what makes a story suitable for Bloomberg
  • Continually generate new ideas for explainers — both big and small — get them assigned, and move them from conception to publication expeditiously
  • Be able to keep long-term projects advancing while also regularly publishing short-term projects
  • Be a great wordsmith, writing strong copy and compelling display language to sell the story
  • Be a careful editor, ensuring text is logically organized; language is clear and precise; jargon, repetition and opinion are excised; and style, grammar and punctuation are correct
  • Be imaginative about a story’s presentation
  • Find ways to turn newsroom colleagues into regular collaborators
  • Work with colleagues on other platforms — for example, video, audio and magazines — to adapt and expand text explainers to their purposes
  • Use audience data to inform the topics we explain and analyze how pieces resonate with readers
  • Collaborate effectively across the team, the newsroom and platforms, conducting yourself honestly, professionally and collegially

You'll need to have:
  • Bachelor’s degree or degree-equivalent qualifications
  • At least three years of similar editing experience in a news organization
  • Experience using web publishing tools
  • A flair for editing copy into standout text
  • The ability to distinguish authoritative sources, to research a topic thoroughly, and to fairly present both sides of an argument
  • A proven record as a team player who collaborates easily and effectively
  • Fluency in both written and spoken English
  • Demonstrated continuous career growth within an organization

We'd love to see:
  • Experience working on data visualizations, video, audio and/or events
