Description & Requirements

The Federal Reserve, the world’s most powerful central bank, has begun lowering interest rates after its most aggressive campaign to tame inflation since the early 1980s. How quickly and deeply will Fed officials cut? Can they bring inflation back to target without tipping the US economy into recession? How are the Fed’s decisions affecting American households and businesses every day? How will the coming elections change the outlook for the world's biggest economy?

These questions are at the heart of decisions by financial markets and governments around the world, and the outcome will influence the livelihoods of millions of global consumers and businesses. Bloomberg News is looking for a talented reporter to answer them from New York, helping set the agenda on this critical beat.

As a member of our Fed team your primary focus will be on the New York Fed -- the beating heart of the central bank -- which is responsible for implementing monetary policy, spotting risks to the financial system, overseeing the biggest banks in the world and battling financial crises.

You’ll interpret statements and speeches from senior Fed officials, including the influential New York Fed president and other regional Fed leaders; spot economic trends and bring them to life for the reader; deliver sharp analysis; and write with authority. You’ll have a deep network of sources and produce scoops and enterprise stories on a range of issues, ensuring that Bloomberg’s Fed coverage is required reading for Wall Street traders, policymakers, business leaders and consumers alike. You're keen to help when needed and embrace an all-hands-on-deck approach.

We’ll trust you to:
- Cover the Fed's policy decisions, speeches, reports and personnel moves while breaking news on the central bank
- Be responsible for covering several of the Fed’s 12 regional bank presidents, including the New York Fed, with regular travel
- Pitch stories on various topics to give readers a richer understanding of the inner workings of the central bank, including the key policymakers driving decisions and the complex issues underlying those debates
- Work closely with colleagues on markets teams to identify stories at the intersection of monetary policy implementation and financial plumbing
- Work under tight deadlines and collaborate with reporters and editors in the US and around the world
- Take risks and find ways to innovate while maintaining the highest standards for accuracy and speed
- Contribute across a variety of Bloomberg platforms and formats, such as video, radio, podcasts, Bloomberg.com and Bloomberg Businessweek magazine
- Chart and visually display data to help your stories stand out

You'll need to have:
-  A proficiency with words and numbers
-  The ability to turn complex data into a narrative accessible to market professionals and casual readers
-  Knowledge of digital platforms and an ability to develop graphics a plus
-  4+ years of business journalism experience
-  This position will require frequent travel to cover Fed speeches
