Description & Requirements
Bloomberg News is looking for an experienced reporter to lead high-impact coverage of US immigration issues as President Donald Trump begins his second term. The role is focused on chronicling major shifts in border policy, from heightened enforcement to new deportation measures, and exploring how these actions impact businesses, the economy, big cities and rural areas. Collaborating with Bloomberg’s government, legal and Latin American reporting teams, the person in this role will break news on policy changes, analyze migration trends and reveal the far-reaching economic and community-level impacts.
The role is based in Los Angeles or Austin, although other locations could be considered
Responsibilities
- Lead Bloomberg's coverage of the Trump administration’s sweeping immigration agenda, focusing on its broad implications across the US economy, workforce, border security and the human impact. Chronicle new strategies for mass deportations, the scale and effect of expanded border patrol resources and the response from the cities and states where migrant populations transit through, live and work. Relatedly, look at how Latin American nations are managing their roles as both sources and destinations for migrants
- Cover the $800 billion US-Mexico cross-border economy, reporting on sectors most impacted by tightened immigration policies, from manufacturing and banking to energy. Investigate the financial networks supporting this trade corridor, as well as the risks of ratcheting up tariffs and potential trade conflicts that may arise
- Develop stories on ground-level impacts of enforcement, delivering real-time dispatches from Texas, other key border points and affected communities
- Examine how immigration policies affect industries reliant on migrant labor, examining issues around visa restrictions, workforce changes and trade dynamics
- Investigate the influence of lobbying and corporate interests in shaping immigration reforms. Track the influence of campaign financing, lobbying and political donations on these efforts, and provide in-depth coverage of how corporate and political interests are converging around the issues
Qualifications
- Minimum five years of experience in immigration, political and/or economic reporting, preferably with a focus on global migration and policy
- Strong analytical skills to connect immigration policy to its economic and community-level impacts
- Knowledge of global migration trends and challenges, with an understanding of US and Latin American policy responses
- Extensive network of sources, including government officials, immigration advocates, economists and border experts
- Spanish-language skills are essential
