JOB DESCRIPTION – LICENSING COUNSEL
The Department
Bloomberg’s Legal & Compliance Department plays a critical role in supporting our businesses and operations around the world. We move quickly and thoughtfully to help address a variety of complex issues that come with being the world’s leading financial news and information company. Our team is made up of talented and hardworking legal and compliance professionals who think creatively and work collaboratively in an open environment to deliver results, drive innovation, and solve difficult problems. We are committed to a workplace where all of our employees can thrive regardless of background, and where everyone feels empowered to make an impact. We also recognize the importance of giving back to our communities as evidenced by our award-winning pro bono program!
What’s the Role
We are seeking an experienced Licensing Counsel to join our Legal & Compliance Department, with a primary focus on inbound content, data, and technology licensing, including emerging issues related to artificial intelligence.
Based in New York, you will be part of a team responsible for structuring, drafting, and negotiating agreements for the acquisition and use of data, news, and other content. You will work closely with business, product, and technology stakeholders to support Bloomberg’s strategic initiatives.
This role will have a significant focus on legal issues related to AI, including the negotiation of rights to use third-party content in connection with generative AI systems, and advising on evolving legal, regulatory, and commercial considerations in this space.
We’ll trust you to:
• Structure, draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of inbound data, content, and technology licensing agreements
• Advise colleagues on challenging and complex licensing issues
• Identify and assess legal risks as products evolve — including in connection with advancing technology such as generative and agentic AI — and provide practical, business-oriented solutions
• Serve as a trusted advisor in shaping business strategy, balancing commercial objectives with legal and reputational risk
• Collaborate with colleagues across Legal, Compliance, and Risk on cross-functional issues
• Monitor and interpret emerging laws, regulations, and market developments impacting content licensing, data use, and artificial intelligence
You’ll need to have:
• JD degree and active membership in the New York bar
• 7+ years of experience with commercial licensing transactions or comparable experience, either at a well-regarded law firm or in-house at a technology, fintech, or data-driven company
• Experience drafting and negotiating, and advising clients on, challenging and complex licensing transactions (including issues related to AI)
• Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to explain legal issues clearly to business and technology professionals
• Working knowledge of intellectual property concepts and regulatory frameworks relevant to financial markets
• Exceptional communication and collaboration skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams and deliver clear, actionable guidance
• Practical, solution-oriented mindset with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
• Strong organizational and project management abilities, with attention to detail and follow-through
We’d Love to See:
• Experience advising in the financial and/or technology sectors
• Ability to identify and use technology and data to improve efficiency and knowledge sharing
• Experience with inbound licensing of media/news content
